Here we go...
On February 5, 2008, our 26th wedding anniversary, we had an appointment with Dr. Vopal, a local surgeon, to discuss a breast biopsy Sharon had on Saturday, February 2nd. We expected to hear that it was mastitis. What we heard was that it was breast cancer, very aggressive and very fast growing. He ordered the bone scan, PET scan, Breast MRI. We got good news on the 11th that the bone scan came back clear. So it was just a matter of "wait" for the other scans. On February 14, we were called by Dr. Vopal to tell us that the PET scan showed that the cancer was in Sharon's liver (this is what had been causing her back pain.) He made the appointment with the Oncologist, Dr. Yeckes-Rodin for Monday, February 18. Sharon's mom and sister flew in for the weekend and Margaret, her sister, went with us to hear the report. The cancer was indeed in her liver thus making this a stage 4 cancer. She ordered another MRI of the brain, MUGA scan of her heart, and a liver biopsy. On Wednesday, Feb. 20, Sharon had the port put in to receive the chemo. On Thursday she had the MRI of the brain and the MUGA. She will begin her chemo on Monday, February 25, and have the liver biopsy on Thursday, Feb. 28.
We have received so many calls and cards from many of you. Thank you for your prayers and your encouraging words. With so many quick deadlines to meet this and that test, we feel somewhat scattered in thougths. As you pray, pray for Sharon's healing. Also, pray that Melissa, Laura and I will have the presence of mind to accomplish all the tasks we need to do to carry on. Sharon is not allowed to work until she is well. She is to stay away from anyone with anything contagious. Obviously, that means she is not able to be at the hospital! So we covet your prayers for all the changes that are going on daily in our lives.
Check back here often. I'll try to update you as often as we have changes.

Dear Sharon, you have no idea how much you and Doug and the girls have been on my mind and in my prayers. Having just gone down this kind of road with JC, I do know your fears, concerns and all the emotions that run with this type of news. All I can say is trust our heavenly Father to give you all strength for the coming days, weeks, months ahead. Thank you for this wonderful blog and family picture. What a wonderful way to keep your family and friends updated...sincerely, Linda
My Dearest Sharon and Doug,
I found out the news of your health at 5pm yesterday and have been in conversation with God ever since. Athough, there are many miles between us, the same God is beside us. I am sending out prayer requests on your behalf to people here in Knoxville as well as other areas. A verse that has meant so much to me, I pass on to you:
"For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jer 29:11
Know that I love you and your family and will be with you in spirit on this journey.
love

Sharon & Family; My sister Carrie King shared your concern and need of prayer. Our daughter Emily was diognosed with Osteosarcoma at the age of 16. Emily is now in her Junior year of college at Utica, NY. Emily is doing great. We are thankful for each new day that comes. I just wanted to let you know that you're family is now on my prayer list. What a beautiful family you have. The most comforting thing is that we know that the Lord is right beside us through anything that we have to go through. You're in the valley now, but the Lord is with you. May you feel the strength of all those praying for your entire family. We know that Cancer is a family disease. Enjoy the sunshine. I always tease Carrie about how lucky she is to live in sunny Florida. We have beautiful Mountains, but it's very cold in the winter. Take Care.
Good morning Sharon and Doug, We will have a special time of prayer for you tonight during Sanctuary choir rehearsal. Perhaps others will join us as we ask our Father for healing.
Eugene
